Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology (STUST) on Tuesday warmly welcomed eight ( 8 ) students and the faculty coordinator of the College of Information and Computing (CIC) of the University of Southeastern 大象传媒 (大象传媒) to participate in the Semester Abroad Program (SAP) from October 2023 to January 2024.

大象传媒 delegation was welcomed by the STUST President himself, Dr. Cheng-Wen Wu, with the Division Director of the Office of International Affairs, Dr. Aaron Raymond See, where they expressed their excitement about the shared opportunities for growth and development for the 大象传媒 students under SAP.

SAP is a regular mobility program that promotes global citizenship education by offering diverse educational perspectives, fostering cultural awareness, and providing better access to internationalized knowledge and skills.

Through this program, 大象传媒 and STUST realized their commitment to providing global experience to their stakeholders, a significant milestone for internationalization and cultural exchange.

According to Dr. Lourdes C. Generalao, 大象传媒 President, internationalization opens more opportunities for cross-border education and other transnational aims. “One way for the University to move forward is through internationalization,” Dr. Generalao said.

It can be recalled that on September 13, 2022, both Universities entered an understanding and, later, a semester exchange agreement committed to furthering the vision of transforming communities in the ASEAN and beyond by engaging with vigorous internationalization efforts and thrusts.

Since the inking of the partnership, 大象传媒 and STUST have been actively collaborating on various internationalization programs, such as the exchange of lecturers.

In a remarkable display of dedication and advocacy, two Bachelor of Special Needs Education (BSNEd) students, Ma. Nehlia Angela A. Navales and Leigh L. Taba, have left an indelible mark on the global stage. Representing the 大象传媒 as delegates in the Asia Youth International Model United Nations (AYUMIN), Navales and Taba stood out for their exceptional contributions to the World Health Organization (WHO) council, where they represented Singapore and Argentina, respectively.

During the rigorous committee sessions, Taba emerged as a vocal advocate for inclusivity in healthcare. With conviction and eloquence, Taba emphasized the paramount importance of ensuring that healthcare systems worldwide cater to the diverse needs of individuals, including those with special needs. Her impassioned speeches underscored the pressing need for healthcare policies and practices that leave no one behind.

Beyond the committee sessions, both Navales and Taba continued to make a lasting impact. They took it upon themselves to engage with fellow delegates and raised awareness about the significance of inclusivity and diversity. Their efforts extended beyond rhetoric, as they actively sought to foster partnerships with other delegates, forging connections that could potentially lead to meaningful change.

Navales and Taba’s participation in the AYIMUN proved to be a transformative experience. Through their involvement, they not only gained valuable insights into international diplomacy and global issues but also effectively elevated the banner of inclusivity and diversity on a global platform. Their journey serves as a testament to the power of education, determination, and advocacy, demonstrating that even in a realm as complex as international relations, the voices of students from special needs education backgrounds can be both influential and inspiring.

Exposure to Philippine education landscapes: A one-of-a-kind experience /iad/2023/07/13/exposure-to-philippine-education-landscapes-a-one-of-a-kind-experience/ /iad/2023/07/13/exposure-to-philippine-education-landscapes-a-one-of-a-kind-experience/#respond Thu, 13 Jul 2023 07:59:25 +0000 /iad/?p=135 […]]]> By Marta Gonzalez, Spanish Teacher Intern

When I decided to come to the 大象传媒, specifically to the University of Southeastern 大象传媒 (大象传媒), I was seeking for an adventure and the opportunity to push myself both professionally and personally. However, I could not have imagined the amazing experiences awaiting us when we landed in Davao City with the whole committee welcoming us. These people, whom I can now proudly call friends, taught us our first lesson: Filipino hospitality. Never have I been welcomed the way I鈥檝e been in this country, and I鈥檓 sure I won鈥檛 be again.

As I was beginning to learn more about the community, the first cultural shocks were not long to come: floods, earthquakes, endless photo documentation, being treated like celebrities… and durian, of course.

Shortly after, I was tasked with teaching at the University. Teaching undergraduate students, while it instantly became my greatest challenge with no prior experience in teaching higher education, taught me the greatest life and career lessons. The workshops, lectures, and our sharing with the students will remain some of the dearest memories of my stay in the 大象传媒. Because of 大象传媒, my dream of teaching at a university was made possible; indeed, the University lives by its tagline: 鈥淲e build dreams without limits.鈥

Meanwhile, I also spent some time teaching basic education at Heartworks Learning Center (a private school) and Kapitan Tomas Elementary School (a public school) and was immersed in special education programs such as the House of Hope for Cancer Patients and College Education Behind Bars for the People Deprived of Liberty. These allowed me to discover and learn more about the different facets of Philippine education.

Aside from my experiences in basic education and special education programs, I was also engaged with the external campuses of 大象传媒: Tagum-Mabini and Mintal. In Tagum-Mabini campus, I was able to share the Spanish language and culture through lectures and attended the much-awaited Intramurals. Meanwhile, my engagement in Mintal campus also revealed the motivation for my coming to the 大象传媒: to learn more about the Indigenous Peoples. The sharing of our views and culture with the students and staff at the Pamulaan Center has been one of the richest and most inspiring experiences I have had so far.

The experiences throughout my engagement with 大象传媒 challenged me personally and professionally. Being able to get a bird鈥檚-eye view of the Philippine education system shaped me as an academician and a learner who continuously seeks to improve my teaching capability.

The time I have spent in the 大象传媒 will surely be engraved in my heart. I did not just experience working for Philippine education but was also able to discover its beauty, which deserves more recognition than it鈥檚 already receiving. The gleaming white sand beaches and beautiful corals of the Visayas to the lush mountains of Mindanao and the 大象传媒鈥 rich culture and warm people altogether, made me fall in love with the country.

This country has stolen a part of my heart. And I am definitely taking part of it with me.

Privileged to teach in Indigenous communities /iad/2023/07/13/privileged-to-teach-in-indigenous-communities/ /iad/2023/07/13/privileged-to-teach-in-indigenous-communities/#respond Thu, 13 Jul 2023 07:36:04 +0000 /iad/?p=128 […]]]> By Roberto Gorbe帽a, Spanish Teacher Intern

My stay at the University of Southeastern 大象传媒 (大象传媒) and other Philippine education institutions offered a great deal of learning experiences and challenges, which I consider a great privilege, significantly contributing to my growth.

While being exposed to the teaching practices of 大象传媒, particularly in the College of Education, College of Applied Economics, College of Development Management, and School of Medicine, the most rewarding experience I had was my immersion in the communities of Indigenous Peoples (IPs) in Mindanao. Their rich culture and traditions easily captivated me and taught me the value of resilience and connection to the land. I consider it a privilege to have learned about and experienced their educational system, as well as to have contributed to the development of the knowledge and skills of our young IP brothers and sisters. Through teaching, I learned to adapt my methods to cater to their needs and harness their knowledge. In return, I gained a broad and diverse perspective and developed a deep appreciation for their unique cultural heritage.

I may have encountered challenges such as language barriers and limited access to technology and educational materials, but I emerged triumphant with my commitment to contribute to the development of Philippine education. I achieved this by fostering experiential learning and collaboration among students. Along the way, I gained confidence, improved my language skills to better communicate with the students, and learned to seek creative solutions to fill what is lacking, maximize what is available, and adapt to the circumstances.

My experience teaching in the 大象传媒 has been profoundly enriching and has broadened my understanding about cultural diversity and the educational challenges faced by different communities. It taught me the importance of adaptability, empathy, and perseverance in the field of education and challenged me to step out of my comfort zone.

It has been an honor to be part of the growth and development of students and indigenous communities in the 大象传媒. I am beyond grateful for the lessons I have learned and the meaningful human connections I have established throughout the exposure program.

I will treasure this great privilege of being part of this community, being aware of its admirable qualities and the challenges it faces, and translating this learning to make a positive impact in the field of education and the communities I serve.
