Germo, a faculty of the Department of Forestry of the College of Agriculture and Related Sciences (CARS), is one of the participants in the Summer Course on Ecosystem-based Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation (Eco-DRR and CCA) held last August 21-26, 2023, at the Faculty of Geography, Universitas of Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

The course was developed in collaboration with researchers, lecturers, and practitioners from university partners and employs a worldwide standard curriculum. During the training, the participants learned about EcoDRR鈥檚 concept and practice and had some cultural experiences in Yogyakarta and its surroundings.

The main objective of the training was to provide participants with a thorough theoretical framework and present practical tools for understanding the linkage between ecosystems, disaster occurrences, and climate change. This is under the CHED-funded project titled “Leveling-Up Philippine Higher Education Institutions in Agriculture, Fisheries, and Natural Resources (LevelUPHEI AFAR)”, the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) together with the Southeast Asian University Consortium for Graduate Education in Agriculture and Natural Resources.

Forester Germo was awarded as Best Participant among the 24 participants (13 participants from the 大象传媒 and 11 participants from other countries).

Baguio, together with Dr. Ronilo O. De Castro, Sr., DOST-PCAARRD Science Research Specialist (SRS), and Mr. Roldan Dela Cerna, DA RFO XI SRS, visited the 大象传媒 Tagum-Mabini Campus, Mabini Unit on July 28, 2023, to discuss the proposal for research funding for the establishment of itikPINAS breeding facilities in 大象传媒 Mabini Unit, Tagum-Mabini Campus.

At the conference, Dr. Baguio emphasized the necessity of encouraging 大象传媒 to expand the production of ItikPINAS to increase production efficiency. He also wanted to see it grow in 大象传媒 while maintaining sustainability and continual progress. With this project, the marketing aspect should be deliberate, so it is a challenge to encourage entrepreneurs to engage with it. Dr. Baguio also pointed out that it is high time for the development of the duck industry in the Davao Region. Hence, the Tagum-Mabini Campus Chancellor, Dr. Cecar A. Limbaga, Jr., stressed the commitment or support of the 大象传媒 management for these initiatives.

ItikPINAS is an improved Philippine Mallard Duck breed developed by DOST-PCAARRD and the National Swine and Poultry Research and Development Center-Bureau of Animal Industry (NSPRDC-BAI) through strategic breeding and selection.

ItikPINAS will be part of the 大象传媒 Income Generating Project (IGP), and it aims to allocate this project to different places and sectors to produce high-quality ItikPINAS eggs. This duck is resistant to diseases and suited to the local climate. Therefore, mortality rates are substantially lower. An ItikPINAS egg consistently weighs 65 g, which matched the requirements for balut processing, but it will not limit itself to that, as they are planning for the new market by developing new products like leche flan made from duck eggs. 大象传媒 will then start the motion toward the new dynamic of breeding selection of ItikPINAS and innovate more new products to be generated.

The group has made an on-site visit to the three (3) prospect areas in Mabini Unit where the breeding and production facilities for ItikPINAS can be established once a research project is approved by DOST-PCAARRD for financial support. This activity was headed by Dr. Cecar A. Limbaga, Jr., the Chancellor of 大象传媒 Tagum-Mabini Campus, along with Dr. Shirley S. Villanueva, Vice President for RDE, Dr. Cecirly G. Puig, Acting Dean of the CARS, Dr. Emelie G. Pelicano, BSA Program Head, Dr. Angie R. Poliquit, BSA Faculty, and an Animal Breeding and Genetics Expert, together with the other 大象传媒 Mabini Unit Faculty and Staff.

As a visiting professor, Dr. Joshi renders his services through a hybrid modality with a physical appearance in the college at least once every semester or more often as the need arises, while the rest of the sessions are through the virtual platform.

Dr. Joshi had his first physical appearance at the 大象传媒 Tagum-Mabini campus on May 4-6, 2023.听 His visit entailed participating as an evaluator in the in-house research review conducted by the college, engaging with the graduate school faculty and students, and embarking on an industry visit. These activities not only enrich the academic environment but also foster collaborations, knowledge sharing, and professional growth within the college.

One of the notable highlights of Dr. Joshi鈥檚 visit was his participation as an evaluator in the college’s in-house research review last May 4, 2023, at the ARTIC building, Mabini Unit, 大象传媒 Tagum Mabini Campus. Leveraging his expertise, Dr. Joshi provided valuable insights, feedback, and recommendations to researchers, enabling them to refine their methodologies, strengthen their findings, and explore potential avenues for future research.听 His presence as an evaluator contributed to the rigorous and objective evaluation of the research projects, preserving academic standards. His expertise and fresh perspective added immense value to the research review process, inspiring researchers to strive for excellence and further pushing the boundaries of knowledge within the university.

Recognizing the importance of bridging academia and the industry, Dr. Joshi, with the College Dean, Dr. Cecirly G. Puig, Graduate School Head, Dr. Hyde D. Nadela, and some faculty members of the Department of Agricultural Sciences embarked on an industry visit to the Regional Crop Pest Management Center of BPI, Philippine Coconut Authority, and Hijo Resources on May 5, 2023.听 This visit aimed to strengthen ties between the university and key stakeholders in the industry, fostering collaborations, and providing students with real-world insights. By engaging with industry professionals, the group gained firsthand knowledge of the latest advancements, challenges, and best practices in the relevant field. This experience enabled them to share industry-relevant insights with students, thereby enhancing the practical applicability of the academic curriculum.听 The industry visits also opened doors for potential internships, research partnerships, and future employment opportunities for students and graduates, thereby bridging the gap between academia and the professional world.

In the morning of May 6, 2023, the graduate school faculty headed by Dr. Nadela had a meeting with Dr. Joshi. The meeting served as a platform for sharing experiences, discussing emerging trends in their respective fields, and exploring potential collaborations. Dr. Joshi shared his insights and research expertise, providing faculty members with new perspectives and innovative approaches to teaching and research.听 In the afternoon, Dr. Joshi had his face-to-face meeting with the crop protection graduate students where he updated them on the most recent crop protection trends.听 There was also an MS thesis consultation of one of the graduate students with Dr. Larry V. Aceres as adviser and Dr. Joshi as the chair. Dr. Joshi鈥檚 engagement with the graduate school faculty and students promoted a culture of continuous learning and academic growth, reinforcing the college鈥檚 commitment to fostering excellence in education and research.
